Chris Wells: Expanded Role Coming Soon? -  10/13/2009 5:34:45 AM

Update:
Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt said on Monday that he needs to call more running plays, and he specifically mentioned Wells as a likely beneficiary, according to the Cardinals' official site.

Recommendation:
Whisenhunt, who calls Arizona's offensive plays, quipped, "Obviously, if that dumb guy that is calling plays will call more runs then Beanie will get more opportunities for carries." Wells carried more times than platoon mate Tim Hightower for the first time this season in Week 5. He is averaging 4.1 YPC on 23 attempts this season and, as expected, his role is likely to expand as the season progresses. Just remember that the Cardinals are still a pass-first team (they have thrown the ball about two-thirds of the time over the last two seasons) and Hightower is still in the picture and especially a threat on short-yardage and passing downs.
