Satin has decided to retire from baseball, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Satin signed a minor league contract with the Padres in March but struggled at Triple-A El Paso this season, batting just .182 over 18 games. The 31-year-old was a sixth round pick by the Mets in 2008 and rose quickly through the organization, playing a career-high 75 games in the majors in 2013. However, he was unable to continue his success and had spent the last two seasons in the minors.

Satin had an espresso shot in the big leagues in 2014, and the results were not pretty. In 292 career plate appearances at the big league level, he has a 13 percent walk rate, a 28 percent strikeout rate, and has batted .243/.346/.351. Throughout his time in the minor leagues, Satin maintained similar walk and strikeout rates, but hit for better averages. He turned 30 this winter and is a right-handed first baseman that shows no power. Now with the Reds on a minor league deal, Satin should be out of your fantasy plans, as his only hope of an immediate MLB future is on the short side of a platoon at first base if Joey Votto gets hurt.
Satin was called up in early June after raking in the minors, to the tune of a .306/.421/.491 line in 259 plate appearances for Triple-A Las Vegas. He saw heavy action during the first month after his recall, even ending up in a platoon at first base with Ike Davis when he returned to action, but his playing time waned a bit as the year wore on. Satin proved he belonged in the majors and was especially effective against lefties (.317/.404/.476 in 82 at-bats), while playing both corner-infield spots. He could fill a similar platoon role next year for the Mets.
Satin had another productive season at Triple-A Buffalo in 2012, but considering that he's now 28 years old, his only path to the big leagues is a utility role. With David Wright and Ike Davis manning the corners, the best-case scenario for Satin might be a Justin Turner-esque run in the event of an injury to one of the regulars, but there is little reason to bank on that happening since the Mets have other options to compete for that opportunity should the need arise.
Satin, a sixth-round pick in 2008 by the Mets out of the University of California, hit .317 with one homer and 16 RBI in 38 games at Triple-A Buffalo to earn a callup to the Mets, where he played 15 games. That came on the heels of Satin hitting .325 with 11 homers and 60 RBI in 338 at-bats with Double-A Binghamton to earn a promotion to the Bisons. Satin projects as a utility player in the majors, so he may start 2012 back with Buffalo, where he would play both corner-outfield spots in addition to first and third base to increase his versatility.
