ANALYSIS
Mier is coming off his best year yet and still has some promise as a prospect for the Blue Jays. He had a slash line of .258/.350/.372 with 56 RBI in Double-A New Hampshire last year and will begin 2016 at Triple-A Buffalo after a hot-hitting spring. The 25-year-old needs to improve his power if he hopes to be called up; he had just five extra-base hits this spring. Expect him to be on the Blue Jays’ radar if an infield spot opens up.

After reaching Triple-A in 2014, Mier spent the entire 2015 campaign with Double-A Corpus Christi. Although he didn't play against as good of pitching as he had seen with Triple-A Oklahoma City, the 25-year-old posted the best all-around stats since his 2012 season with High-A Lancaster. He hit a career-high seven home runs and drove in a career high 56 runs, mostly thanks to a nice .722 OPS. His plate discipline was also solid, as he walked 11.5% of the time and only struck out 17.4% of the time. Mier signed with the Blue Jays on a minor league pact for the 2016 season, and although he doesn't have to be behind Carlos Correa in the organizational pecking order, he'll still likely act as organizational depth with Troy Tulowitzki, Ryan Goins, and Darwin Barney ahead of him for reps at shortstop.

Mier, a 23-year-old shortstop who repeated a level at High-A Lancaster in 2012 to work on his offense, finally made the jump to Double-A last season. Against better pitching, the former first-round pick regressed mightily, slashing a dreadful .194/.293/.265 line over 104 games (compared to .292/.396/.409 in 46 games the year prior). Given his poor output, Mier's chances at breaking camp with Houston this season are slim-to-none, especially since the Astros are rich in talent at the shortstop position with Jonathan Villar, Carlos Correa and Nolan Fontana far ahead of him in their development. Most likely, Mier will return to Double-A this season to work on his offensive game, and his ceiling with the Astros might be limited to a utility role down the road.

The shortstop once drafted in the first round for his speed and defense spent another year in High-A working on his offense, this time with a little bit more success. Mier finished the year with a .292/.396/.409 line, albeit in limited at-bats due to a hamstring injury. Mier's star has dimmed considerably over the past couple of years, and as of right now it looks like his upside is as a utility man, backing up some of the Astros' more promising middle-infield prospects. When all is said and done, he may wind up being shipped to a team looking for help defensively up the middle.

Mier looked overmatched in his first taste of Double-A pitching, closing the year with a .235 batting average and an OBP (.323) higher than his slugging percentage (.314). Though disappointing, bear in mind that Mier was very young for the level at age 19 and had jumped to the Southern League all the way from rookie ball. The team still thinks of him as the shortstop of the future, despite the fact that he did not show much last season. For fantasy purposes, he's still a few years away from being a contributor in Houston, in the best-case scenario.

The Astros surprised many when they made Mier a first-round pick. Scouts knew his speed and defense were legitimate big league tools, however, many doubted his bat would translate. He's still years away from Houston, but good raw tools combined with a standout work ethic may help him materialize into a fixture in the Astros' middle infield. Mier impressed in the Appalachian League last summer with a .276/.380/.484 line along with seven homers and 10 steals in 192 at-bats. He'll likely start 2010 as a 19-year-old at Low-A.
