Past Fantasy Outlooks
2015
2014
Given the injuries the Nationals had last year, Kobernus seemingly would have gotten more of an opportunity on the big league roster, but alas the speedy utility player was among the first to go down. He was hit by a pitch at Triple-A, resulting in a broken hand, and didn't return to action until the end of June. Kobernus was unable to get much going at the plate after he came off the DL, but he is capable of playing solid defense at a few positions, making contact, and stealing some bases. With second base still technically open on the Nats' depth chart, he could head into spring training competing for a starting job, but it seems more likely he'll have to head back to Triple-A and wait for another call.
For a guy with 136 steals (and an 83% success rate on the base paths) over the last three seasons, you'd think Kobernus would be in higher demand. The Nationals left him available in the Rule 5 draft last offseason and lost him to the Tigers, but they returned him to Washington at the end of spring training and he wound up on the 40-man roster anyway after injuries necessitated a callup. It's telling that Detroit, having seen him up close, elected to take Steve Lombardozzi over him in the Doug Fister trade, but Kobernus' ability to hit for average and swipe bases still makes him a very intriguing fantasy prospect. His plate discipline showed some improvement last season too, and Anthony Rendon isn't exactly a sure thing at second base. Kobernus will likely start the season on the bench or back at Triple-A, but there's a glimmer of sleeper potential here.
