Liddi agreed to a minor-league contract with the Royals which includes an invitation to spring training, Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Liddi spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons in Mexico, where he hit .281 the first year and just .235 the second. He did produce a combined 40 home runs across that span, a number that is in line with his three minor-league seasons where he hit at least 23 home runs each year. The 29-year-old has a career .208 MLB average in 173 at-bats, though his last action in the Show came in 2013. He will have to prove he can hit for better contact this spring should he hope to latch on to a 40-man roster spot with the Royals.

Contact continues to be Liddi's nemesis. He struck out 49 times in 116 at-bats last season, and even when he started hot (.286 through 23 games), the signs were there that a fall was coming because of the strikeouts. A midseason demotion to Triple-A didn't help either, as Liddi struck out seven times in 12 plate appearances upon his return in September. Until Liddi figures out his contact issues, he's going to be hard-pressed to stick in Seattle. With Kyle Seager entrenched at third base, the best Liddi can hope for this season is to land a utility job -- in addition to third, he played first base last year and shortstop in the minors; his outfield experiment last season failed, but he also could play left in a pinch. More realistically, expect him back at Triple-A this year.
Liddi earned a callup to Seattle last season and turned in a good showing with three homers and three doubles in 40 at-bats. Liddi has demonstrated that his power is legit, but his contact rate so far at the major league level is below-average. He totaled 17 strikeouts to three walks in those same 40 at-bats. The Mariners likely will have an opening at third base this spring, but until Liddi cuts the K's (he had 170 strikeouts in 138 games at Triple-A Tacoma last year), he'll be hard pressed to win the job.
Liddi proved last season that the progress he showed in 2009 at High-A High Desert was not a California League statistical illusion. Liddi, who hit 72 extra-base hits in 2009, cracked 15 homers and 37 doubles with an .829 OPS at Double-A West Tennessee last year. He'll move up to Triple-A Tacoma this season, but his numbers could slide unless his plate discipline improves -- 145 strikeouts last season. Still, at 22, Liddi has time to develop. The Mariners added him to the 40-man roster in the offseason, and there's a chance he could find his way to Seattle at some point with his strong glove if a spot opens midseason, but there's no rush.
Liddi dominated at High-A last season, slugging 72 XBH, ranking third in the Cal League with a 1.005 OPS and banging out the second-most hits in the circuit with 170 in 129 games. What's more, he played spectacular defense at third base. How he reacts to a less hitter-friendly environment this year will be key, but a lot of scouts think his progress last year was real. He's only 21, so time is on his side if he doesn't attack the higher levels with as much gusto from the outset.
