Okay, so DeShields isn’t your everyday rockstar player, but I do dig his potential overall.

Chapman was a September call-up for the Astros in 2016, and yielded eight runs in eight innings over nine appearances. He hadn't exactly been dominant for Triple-A Fresno, although his 4.87 ERA in the notoriously hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League isn't all that terrible. A tall lefty who throws in the low 90s, Chapman makes heavy use of his slider, a swing-and-miss pitch that has helped him strike out well over a batter an inning the minor leagues. Chapman has yo-yoed between Houston and Fresno for four straight years now, always vying to be the last lefty in the bullpen. He's been unable to throw strikes consistently at the big league level, and has a BB/9 of at least 4.5 each of those four seasons. At 29 years old, one starts to wonder if Chapman will ever click and become a consistently effective major leaguer, or if he's destined for a career in Triple-A. While the strikeout potential is somewhat intriguing, Chapman likely won't start the year in the majors, and will have limited value in most formats.
Chapman entered spring training with the Astros in competition with Joe Thatcher and Darin Downs for the second left-hander role out of the bullpen, but Thatcher won the job and the 27-year-old was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Fresno. He spent the majority of 2015 there, appearing in 49 games with less than desirable results. Chapman compiled a 4.75 ERA and 1.62 WHIP with eight saves and a terrible walk rate (4.4 BB/9). The lefty has always been erratic, but he possesses some upside too with a 11.2 K/9 in the minors. If he can improve his control, he could be an option out of the bullpen for the Astros in low-leverage situations. Chapman is more likely to open 2016 in the minors, however.
Chapman broke camp as the lone lefty in Houston's bullpen, but a 12.27 ERA and 3.27 WHIP after six relief appearances resulted in a quick demotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 27-year-old performed much better with the RedHawks, posting nine saves, a 1.23 ERA and 64:25 K:BB over 44 minor league innings. He was a bit wild during that time (1.43 WHIP, 5.1 BB/9), but the Astros gave him another shot in mid-August and he finished the season with two wins, five holds and a 4.64 ERA. Chapman will contend with veteran southpaws Tony Sipp and Darin Downs for a role in the Astros' bullpen out of spring training.
After averaging 11.0 K/9 throughout his minor league career, Chapman made his major league debut last July and appeared in 25 games (20.1 innings) out of the bullpen for the Astros. The 25-year-old lefty issued 13 free passes (5.8 BB/9) and saw his K/9 dip to 6.6, but an 88 percent strand rate kept his ERA under 2.00. Chapman needs to improve his control, but he's likely to remain a part of the Astros' bullpen based on his strikeout potential alone. Without an established option locked in to close out games, it would be wise to closely monitor the peripherals of the relievers in the Houston bullpen throughout the season to see if a suitable internal candidate emerges with the ability to secure the job.
