Zeid is coming back from the WBC, where he impressed for Team Israel, notching 10 scoreless innings while striking out 10 and earning two saves in four appearances. The 29-year-old posted a combined 4.61 ERA across 91.2 innings between Triple-A Las Vegas and Double-A Binghamton last season. He'll likely serve as organizational depth in 2017.

Collette Calls: The Three Most Intriguing New Pitches of 2020
June 8, 2020
Jason Collette has been tracking new pitches every spring since 2014. How often are those new pitches successfully incorporated? And which new pitches should we be watching closely in 2020?

Offseason Lasik surgery helped Zeid -- who is astigmatic -- feel more comfortable on the mound, but the right-hander still struggled to the tune of a 6.97 ERA and 1.79 WHIP in 23 relief appearances for the Astros. The cause of his struggles may have been due to a condition called sesamoiditis, which caused pain and inflammation at the bottom of his feet and subsequently affected his pitching mechanics. The right-hander actually had two procedures done to correct the issue; season-ending surgery on his right foot in late July and the same treatment on his left foot in October. Zeid is expected to be ready for spring training, however, during which he'll compete for a spot in the Tigers' Opening Day bullpen.
Zeid was called up in late July following the trade of Jose Veras to the Tigers and was one of the better relievers for the Astros down the stretch. After tallying 13 saves with a 53:27 K:BB ratio in 43.2 innings at Triple-A Oklahoma City, the hard-throwing righty registered one save with a 24:12 K:BB ratio in 27.2 innings with Houston. With uncertainty surrounding the Astros' closer situation, Zeid could be in the mix for saves at some point this season, especially if his strikeout rate trends upward toward his minor league average. The walks are his primary flaw at the present time, but improvement in that area could make him an ideal option to finish out games for the rebuilding Astros in 2014.
