March 17, 2023
Marshall signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Thursday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marshall underwent Tommy John surgery back in November of 2021. He's presumably fully recovered from that operation, although that has not been confirmed. The 32-year-old posted a 3.31 ERA and 97:40 K:BB over 100.2 innings for the White Sox from 2019-21, so he could be useful for the Angels if he can regain his pre-injury form.

Giants showing interest
PFree Agent
January 10, 2023
Marshall has been discussing a contract with the Giants, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The Giants just signed Tommy John rehabber Luke Jackson and it sounds like they could scoop up a fellow rehabbing righty in Marshall. Marshall had elbow surgery in October of 2021, so he should have a chance to be ready for Opening Day. Slusser notes that other clubs are also showing interest in Marshall, but the Giants might have an advantage since he's from the Bay Area. Marshall posted a 3.31 ERA and 97:40 K:BB in 100.2 innings for the White Sox from 2019-21.

2015
Marshall's seventh big-league season was easily his finest, as he registered career bests with a 2.38 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 32.3 K%. The sample size is small due to the condensed nature of the campaign, but Marshall's 2.04 FIP supports the notion that his success wasn't simply a matter of good fortune. Once a fastball-first pitcher, Marshall has turned his career around by making his elite changeup his primary offering, and he nearly doubled his curveball usage last season; collectively, opposing batters hit a meek .131 against the pair of offerings. The right-hander thrived by limiting damage through the air, yielding zero barrels and only one home run over 23 appearances. In fact, he allowed just five extra-base hits in 22.2 innings of work, resulting in a superb .258 xSLG. Marshall should have a steady late-inning role again next season as part of a superb White Sox bullpen now spearheaded by Liam Hendriks.
After four frustrating seasons in which he compiled a 7.89 ERA and 2.17 WHIP over 43.1 innings with three different teams, Marshall moved to the White Sox in 2019 and settled in as a reliable seventh-inning setup man, notching 19 holds in 55 appearances. Although the right hander's 2.49 ERA looks shiny on the surface, there are some indications that it's a deceptive measure of his actual performance. Marshall's unimpressive 4.30 FIP was largely shaped by a normally destructive combination of subpar control (11.5 BB%) and low strikeout numbers (19.6 K%), and his .266 BABIP and 84.8 LOB% also suggest a measure of good fortune. Marshall does excel at keeping the ball on the ground (51.4 GB%) and limiting hard contact (25.7% hard-hit rate), which could help him retain a setup role. However, some ERA regression is to be expected, and he doesn't offer enough upside to have a place on fantasy squads.
Marshall flashed some potential in 2014, striking out 54 hitters in 49.1 innings while recording a 2.74 ERA. For Arizona the last two seasons, however, Marshall has posted ERAs of 6.08 and 8.80. The biggest difference: Marshall's lack of strikeouts. In 2014, he posted a 9.85 K/9. That dropped to 4.73 in 2015 and failed to climb that high at 5.28 last season. His fastball averaged 93.4 mph last season, which wasn't far off from the 93.9 mph he averaged in 2014, so it appears his stuff is about the same. If Marshall is able to start racking up more strikeouts, he could move into a higher-leverage role in 2017. He did post 19 holds in that 2014 season, so Arizona could regain confidence in Marshall late in games.
Marshall was called up by the Diamondbacks in May and never looked back, striking out more than a batter per inning in his first taste of the big leagues. He became an asset in leagues that reward holds, piling up 19 over 57 appearances and proving capable of mitigating the effects of hitter-friendly Chase Field by inducing grounders at a 60.7% clip. Marshall has plenty of velocity on his fastball (average 93.9 mph) and he can use his secondary pitches -- a curveball and changeup -- to keep hitters guessing (13.9% swinging-strike rate). He also showed progress in the second half, shaving more than a run from his ERA (second-half 2.03 ERA; 31:8 K:BB in 26.2 innings). With improvement against lefties, Marshall may be a sleeper to eventually close, but he'll have a prominent role in the Arizona bullpen regardless of whether that opportunity comes in 2015.
