McGriff, now a volunteer assistant coach at Jesuit High School in Tampa, confirmed that he's now retired, the Tampa Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
McGriff was released by the Devil Rays in July 2004. With 493 career home runs to his credit, McGriff had been trying to sign with someone (indeed, anyone) in order to get a chance to reach 500 homers, but he was unsuccessful and has now moved on. "I'm not playing anymore," McGriff said. "I played a lot of years, and I was blessed. I have no complaints. A lot of guys wish they could play one day in the major leagues, and I got to play 18 years. I lived the dream ... but then they woke me up," McGriff said with a grin.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2004
2003
The Dodgers were hoping to get one more productive season out of the 39-year old McGriff, but it was not to be. Injuries derailed his season and he came up nine home runs short of 500. Whoever signs McGriff, if anyone, should not let him hit against lefties any longer (.194 vs. L in 2003 after hitting only .213 vs. L in 2002). A platoon job is probably his best chance at reaching 500 home runs.
McGriff has put up some pretty solid numbers the last two seasons, but with Hee Seop Choi in the pipeline, it was time for the Cubs to let him go. He'll hit his 500th home run somewhere, and should still be good for 20 home runs. The switch to Chavez Ravine might not be as bad as it looks - Wrigley Field has played more as a pitcher's park in recent years.
