Past Fantasy Outlooks

2003
Shuey did not pitch in the majors in 2004 and it's likely that he'll miss the start of the 2005 season as well. He started 2004 on the DL with a torn tendon in his thumb and ended the year with his third surgery on his degenerative right hip. The Dodgers may decide to re-sign him at a cheaper price, allowing him to rehab until he is ready to contribute.
Shuey was consistent and steady in 2003 and will again be asked to set-up for Dodgers' closer Eric Gagne. Either Shuey or Guillermo Mota could wind up closing if something were to happen to Gagne.
After a rocky start in the NL with the Dodgers, Shuey finished strong and might be a decent sleeper for 2003. He is signed for two more years at slightly more than Paul Quantrill money.

After closer Chris Ray lost his sixth game Friday night, interim manager Dave Trembley said he wanted to remove some pressure from the right-hander, and indicated that he might do so by allowing others, including Shuey, to take some save opportunities, the Baltimore Sun reports. "I think it would be in everybody's best interest if we could get Ray out of being the closer exclusively on this club," Trembley said.
