Wilson opted out of his minor league contract with the Royals on Thursday after not earning a spot on the team's final roster, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Jason Kendall and Brayan Pena will enter the season as the Royals' catchers. Wilson will have a chance to hook on with a new team and will likely begin the season in Triple-A if he finds a new home.

Wilson has undergone ligament replacement surgery in each of the last two summers. He is expected to be healthy in time for spring training but he'll need to prove he's healthy before winning any kid of role with the Royals as a backup catcher this spring.
Wilson missed all of the 2007 due to elbow soreness and eventually underwent Tommy John surgery in June when rehab proved ineffective. He's expected to be healthy enough to be the backup catcher with the Tigers this year, but he’s unlikely to get more than 150 at-bats playing behind Ivan Rodriguez.
Wilson played sparingly as Ivan Rodriguez's backup last season. He's an adequate reserve but won't play more than one day a week if Rodriguez manages to stay healthy all season.
Wilson played sparingly as Ivan Rodriguez's backup last season. He's an adequate reserve but doesn't do enough with the bat to generate any fantasy interest.
Last season began with Wilson as the third man behind the plate who was expected to only play when both Jason Phillips and Mike Piazza needed a day off. Just when he broke out of that role in August to receive fairly regular playing time he ruptured a ligament in his left hand, which forced him to have season-ending surgery in September. Now with the Tigers, his projected playing time depends solely on the health of Ivan Rodriguez.
Wilson saw extended playing time in 2003 due to Mike Piazza's injury. He got off to a strong start but a 1-for-49 slump cost him the starting catching job to Jason Phillips. Once Piazza returned, Wilson was limited to 46 at bats over the last two months of the year and begins 2004 as the third man on the depth chart.
Wilson will remain of little value unless the Mets move Piazza to first, which won't happen unless Vaughn gets hurt again. Still, when called upon, Wilson did produce five home runs and 26 RBI in 74 at bats.
