Parrish was 1-1 with a 4.04 ERA in 13 appearances (six starts) for Toronto after going 10-1 with a 2.97 ERA at Triple-A Syracuse to start the season. He's had some success at Triple-A before, but that hasn't translated into much success at the big league level. His lack of pure stuff and command will keep him bouncing around between Triple-A and the majors, regardless of where he lands after filing for free agency.
What the Mariners ever wanted with Parrish is a mystery. After being acquired Aug. 9 from Baltimore, where he posted a 36:33 K:BB and a 5.40 ERA in 45 games, Parrish made eight appearances for the Mariners, allowing 22 hits, four walks and eight runs in 10.1 innings. The team didn't offer him contract for 2008, but Toronto offer him an invitation to spring training.
The fact that the Orioles have kept Parrish around despite his Tommy John surgery and 132 walks in 177.1 career major league innings goes to show how rare it is to find left-handed power arms. If Parrish is healthy enough come spring training, he’ll compete with Kurt Birkins and Brian Burres to be the second left-hander in Baltimore’s bullpen after Jamie Walker.
Parrish displayed electric stuff in 2005, striking out 25 batters in 17 1/3 innings, but was plagued by wildness and was demoted to Double-A to correct his problems. He exacerbated a strained elbow ligament in the minors, and will likely miss the entire 2006 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last summer.
Parrish found his niche in 2004 as a left-handed long reliever out of the bullpen. His 55 walks are a cause for concern, however. He should fill the same role in 2005.
Parrish pitched well in a limited sample in September, earning a spot on the 40-man roster. There will be a shakeup in the bullpen leading up to Jorge Julio, and Parrish will be part of the reorganization.
