Ellison will compete for a fifth outfielder's role with the Rangers after he was let go by the Reds. If he wins that job, he's still not going to offer much power or enough patience at the plate to use his speed.
Ellison had a nice .406/.452/.536 line at Triple-A Fresno last year but is nothing more than a fifth outfielder in the big leagues, evidenced by his .273 OBP in 81 at-bats last year with San Francisco. He will once again struggle to make the team out of spring training.
Being better than Marquis Grissom got him a starting job, but you need to have higher standards. The acquisition of Steve Finley will make playing time hard to come by.
Ellison was recalled briefly from Triple-A Fresno to provide depth in the outfield, but he played just 13 games for the Giants. He's got some good wheels, but with the team's need for a big bat in the outfield, he will probably start the season in Triple-A.
He might have been a backup outfielder in the postseason had the Brewers not released Jeffrey Hammonds. Now, with a slew of veterans in San Francisco and an unimpressive 2003 season at Fresno, Ellison is just biding his time until the Giants take him off of the 40-man roster or he reaches six-year free agency.
Ellison went .270-5-40 in 81 games at high Single-A last year, then leaped to Triple-A and did better: .311-3-8 in 49 games, 16-for-19 in steals, .797 OPS. He'll probably start 2003 at Triple-A again (he turns 25 in April), and he could contend for a reserve outfielder role with the big club during the year.
