PBaltimore Orioles
November 12, 2012
The Orioles signed Meyer to a minor league deal Monday, MASN Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer has bounced around since he was included in the Tim Hudson trade back in 2004. He has gone from "can't miss" to journeyman and has not seen major league action since 2010. At this point, Meyer will provide some organizational depth and he could be used as either a starter or reliever.

The marginal control Meyer displayed in 2009 deserted him, and while an early season calf injury may have thrown his mechanics out of whack, the Marlins didn't seem inclined to see if lightning could strike twice. If he finds the plate again with any kind of regularity, he could still be very useful in a big league bullpen. It won't cost the Phillies much to find out after they signed him to a minor league deal in November.
Meyer was reborn in Florida, as the club gave up any thoughts of using him in the rotation and instead turned him into a full-time reliever. After a fantastic start to the season his hit rate spiked in the second half and his control eroded a little, but his K/9IP remained solid so his 'true' level lies somewhere between his 1.78 first-half ERA and the ugly 5.09 he posted after the All-Star break. With no significant platoon split Meyer won't get typecast as a LOOGY, and he should be one of Leo Nunez's top set-up men in 2010.
Meyer and whatever remains of his once prized left arm were obtained off waivers by Florida following another disappointing season. There's little to suggest his career will ever take off, but the Marlins felt the gamble was worth it for the former centerpiece of the Tim Hudson deal years back.
Meyer finally reached the majors after dealing with shoulder injuries for the past several seasons. His season at Triple-A Sacramento (115.1 innings, 103 hits, 51 walks, 105 K) showed some promise but there are still control issues to iron out. He'll likely get a look at a rotation spot in the spring, and his second-half numbers in the minors (44 innings, 28 hits, 10 walks, 45 K) were pretty good.
Meyer, once considered the prize prospect in the deal that sent Tim Hudson to the Braves, had his second consecutive season end with shoulder woes. He's expected to resume throwing in March or April, but he's a longshot to have much of an impact in 2007.
Meyer gets a mulligan for 2005 because of season-long shoulder woes that limited him to just 19 games. He should be back on the mound and healthy right out of the gate in 2006.
Meyer, a 2002 supplemental first-round pick, could contend for a rotation or set-up job in the big leagues this spring after moving rapidly last season from Double-A through Triple-A to a call-up with the Braves. He's a solid power pitcher with sharp command and a low-90s fastball that has good movement.
Meyer, a first round supplemental pick in 2002, made an impact in first year of pro ball rising from Low to High A without blinking. The Collegian out of JMU posted an outstanding 158 to 32 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 160 innings between the levels, and is a prospect to take note of if he can repeat in 2004. The southpaw currently possesses two quality pitches with a low 90s lively fastball and an emerging slider that looks to be become a plus pitch. In order to succeed at his next stop, Double-A, he’ll have to have a more compete arsenal and further develop his changeup. If the 22-year-old hopes to remain on track for a 2005 debut this development will have to be rapid.
