Messenger signed a two-year, $3.1 million contract extension with the Hanshin Tigers, the Japan Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Messenger went 12-11 last season with a 3.01 ERA for Hanshin and has been a top starter in NPB (73-65 with a 3.05 ERA in seven seasons). It's unlikely he'll return to play in MLB as he'll turn 37 at the end of his contract.

Messenger is a 27-year-old journeyman reliever with little upside. The Mariners have plenty of bullpen options, so it's hard to see Messenger winning a job in spring training. He could be called up during the season once again, as he did last year when he made 13 late-season appearances.
Messenger posted a 5.09 ERA and 1.741 WHIP in 40.2 innings in San Francisco after coming over from Florida in a trade involving Armando Benitez last year. For such a hard thrower, his 22 punchouts were a huge disappointment. He'll work in middle relief this season.
Messenger spent most of the year in the Florida bullpen, but with very unimpressive results. As the Marlins' more highly-touted arms sort themselves out, opportunities for more pedestrian pitchers like Messenger will dwindle, so 2007 could be a make-or-break season for him.
After getting moved to the bullpen at Double-A in 2004 with fine results, Messenger struggled somewhat last year, first with the thin air at Albuquerque then with major league hitters. He should break camp as one of the Marlins set-up men, but a poor spring could land him back in the minors.
Messenger was moved to the bullpen in 2004 and responded, striking out better than a batter an inning while improving his control. Should any of the Marlins free agent middle relief help falter, Messenger should be at the top of the list of replacements.
