ANALYSIS
It's a nice start for the post-prospect as he tries to reclaim his career. Still just 23, he's not too old for Double-A, but he's yet to show he can walk or control the strikeouts so this batting average may not last.

Villalona missed the 2010 and 2011 seasons due to murder charges in the Dominican Republic, for which he was eventually acquitted, but the time off seems to have hurt his chances of ever fully utilizing his fantastic raw power. After hitting 22 home runs in 518 plate appearances between High-A and Double-A in 2013, the 24-year-old outfielder only hit 10 homers in 400 plate appearances at Double-A last season and failed to make noticeable improvements with his approach, slashing .227/.290/.381. His natural abilities will allow him to continue to feast on mistakes and hit double-digit home runs each season in the minors. But he has not shown any sign that he can get on base at an acceptable clip.

Villalona smacked 22 home runs in 518 plate appearances between High-A and Double-A in 2013. The slugging first baseman's only useful asset is power, as he struk out at an alarming rate of 28.7 percent last season and has not shown the ability to take a walk (3.8 percent in 2013). He will have to improve that aspect of his game if he ever wants to reach the majors. As it stands now, he projects to be a Juan Francisco-type hitter, with lots of power by plenty of strikeouts to boot. Villalona will likely start the 2014 season with Double-A Richmond and be given the opportunity to join Triple-A Fresno if he produces early.

Villalona spent the entire 2012 in the Dominican Summer League because of visa issues related to the fact he was charged with murder in the Dominican Republic in 2009. The charges were eventually dropped, and the 22-year-old first baseman was able to hit .305/.435/.500 with seven home runs in 193 plate appearances after not playing in a professional game since 2009. It is unclear what the organization has planned for Villalona this year, but it is clear that he is not in the team's immediate plans despite being on the 40-man roster.

Villalona was recently cleared of murder charges and after threatening to sue the Giants afterward, he reached an agreement with the team and was added to the 40-man roster during the offseason. While he clearly possesses enough upside that it made sense to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, Villalona hasn’t played baseball since 2009 and despite the high signing bonus at such a young age, he’s exhibited terrible plate discipline and looks like an extreme long shot to eventually make a major impact, although it’s worth noting he’s still just 21 years old.

Playing for Low-A Augusta, Villalona hit 17 homers with 64 RBI over 464 at-bats, finishing with a .747 OPS. His accompanying 118:18 K:BB ratio was extremely disconcerting, but Villalona is still just 18. His ability to stay in shape has been questioned, and it looks like his defensive liabilities will limit him to first base, but his bat possesses plenty of upside. He’s still a long way from contributing in San Francisco, however.

Villalona was signed at age 16 from the Dominican Republic last year and is an advanced power-hitting prospect with enormous potential. The Giants naturally intend to bring him along slowly to help him mature on and off the field. Villalona has been getting a number of reps at first base in the Instructional League this fall. He committed 18 errors in 52 games at third base in the Arizona Rookie League and is a big guy (6-3, 200 at age 17), so this is a likely positional move for him anyhow. He might already qualify as the Giants’ best prospect but is obviously a long way from helping the major league team.
