Desme has decided to retire from baseball and enter the priesthood, FoxSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This decision comes as a very unexpected surprise after Desme hit .315/.413/.667 with 11 homers and 27 RBI in 27 Arizona Fall League games on the heels of a .288/.365/.568 combined line with 31 homers, 89 RBI and 40 steals between Low-A Midland and High-A Stockton. Somewhere, A's general manager Billy Beane has thrown furniture through drywall after hearing about Desme's decision. The 23-year-old was set to begin the 2010 season at Double-A with the potential for a late-season callup to Oakland.

John Sickels' Column: Arizona Fall League Review
November 29, 2009
2010 Fantasy Outlook
Desme entered 2009 as a virtual unknown, limited to just 49 at-bats as a pro since being selected in the second round in 2007. Wrist and shoulder injuries limited to just two games in 2008, but he broke out big time in 2009, posting the only 30 HR/40 SB season across minor league baseball. His numbers slipped a bit at Double-A Midland (.274/.334/.490 in 69 games, but a perfect 24-for-24 on the bases) after a nice season at High-A Stockton (.304/.398/.656 in 62 games). His encore in the Arizona Fall League (.315/.413/.667) earned him MVP honors. He struck out too frequently at higher levels (81 whiffs in 259 at-bats at Double-A; 34 whiffs in 108 at-bats in the AFL), which clouds his future as he advances to Triple-A, but he's definitely put himself on the prospect radar again.
