PETITION ON BEHALF OF YANKEE-PITCHER OWNERS
RE: Moving Derek Jeter to third base and Alex Rodriguez to shortstop.
To: The New York Yankees
We the undersigned oppose the wrongful action of the New York Yankees continuing to subject their pitching staff to Derek Jeter's fielding inadequacies at shortstop despite the presence of Alex Rodriguez and his gold glove.
This is not to say that Derek Jeter isn't a very good hitter and a huge part of the Yankees' success over the last several years. Jeter's consistent bat and clutch postseason play as well as his professionalism and positive attitude are big assets to the Yankees.
But as fantasy owners of Yankee pitchers, we have a vested interest in seeing the Yankees make this move. The objective evidence is incontrovertible.
Derek Jeter was dead last in baseball last year in range factor (putouts plus assists divided by innings) and zone rating (percentage of balls fielded that were hit into his defensive area).
An aberration due to injury? No. In 2002, he was also last in range factor and next to last in zone rating.
Of course, the Yankees could accept A-Rod's invitation to switch positions without any real consequence during the regular season. But think of fantasy owners who will see their Yankee pitchers subjected to a multitude of undeserved hits ("....just past the diving Jeter...") and earned runs. And think ahead to the postseason and consider the unnecessary risk of losing a series due to a stubborn refusal to field your best defensive alignment.
Simply put, your best shortstop should play shortstop. Please discontinue your campaign against your pitchers before it's too late for all of us.
