March 14, 2016
Pettibone (shoulder) was assigned to minor league camp on Monday, the Chicago Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer reports.
ANALYSIS
He did not pitch in any spring games for the Cubs, likely due to the fact that his shoulder still isn't right after needing a second surgery on that right shoulder in July. When healthy, he should head to Triple-A, and while he has always been a starter, the Cubs may look to convert him to a reliever.

Pettibone had his 2013 season cut short due to shoulder soreness and struggled through more shoulder problems last season. He tried to rehab his injury before finally deciding to go under the knife to fix a superior labral antero-posterior (SLAP) tear in his shoulder. The Phillies are uncertain if Pettibone will be ready for Opening Day, but he should be available to pitch at some point early in the season. A repair of a SLAP tear typically allows pitchers to return to their previous levels of performance, making it reasonable to assume Pettibone can still be effective against major league hitters. Given the Phillies' lack of starting pitching depth and Pettibone's relative success when he has been healthy, there is an opportunity for him to log significant innings as a starter this season. His fantasy appeal is limited, however, as he doesn't strike out many batters and his walk rate has tended to be a touch high, leaving him prone to poor starts.
Pettibone made his major league debut last season after John Lannan went down with a knee injury. He pitched well enough to stick around the rest of the season until he was shut down in August after developing rotator cuff inflammation. Pettibone has a low-90s fastball that he complements with a slider and changeup. He does not overpower hitters, so Pettibone needs to have his offspeed stuff working to be successful. He was showing signs of improvement in his strikeout rate in the second half of last season, but his walk rate also ballooned - perhaps a sign that he traded some command to try to generate more swings and misses. Pettibone profiles as a back of the rotation starter and does not project to be much more than that throughout his career. He will have to compete for a rotation spot this spring, and his chances of earning that spot will depend on what free agent arms the Phillies bring in over the winter.
Pettibone continued his steady ascent through the minor leagues last season with a summer promotion to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. His surface numbers at Triple-A looked very good, but his walk rate jumped up from 2.08 BB/9IP at Double-A to 4.70 at Triple-A. Pettibone has been closer to a 2.0 BB/9IP over his minor league career, and he just turned 22 years old in the middle of last season, so there is time for him to make adjustments to bring his walk rate back down. He'll need to do that as he does not generate a lot of strikeouts with his low-90s fastball. Pettibone's best pitch is his change-up and he has been working on adding a cutter to his repertoire. He'll open the year back at Triple-A and could put himself into position for a promotion to the majors should the Phillies have a need to dip into the minors for a starting pitcher this season.
Pettibone finished the 2011 season 11-10 with a 2.96 ERA and a 115:34 K:BB ratio in 161 innings at High-A Clearwater. His 1.90 BB/9 IP ratio is very good but his 6.43 K/9 IP ratio is just barely above what you like to see from a pitcher. Pettibone has reportedly seen his fastball velocity increase from the high-80s when he was drafted into the low-90s, but his secondary stuff is still developing. He'll be moving from a very pitcher friendly league to a more neutral environment this season while also stepping up in the level of competition. He's worth keeping an eye on, but his strikeout rate will need to hold steady or improve with the jump to Double-A to keep him on the prospect radar.
The Phillies drafted Pettibone in the third round of the 2008 draft out of Esperanza High School in Anaheim and lured him away from pitching for the University of Southern California with a $500,000 signing bonus. Pettibone throws a slider and changeup to go with his fastball, but his breaking ball remains a work in progress. Pettibone won't turn 21 until July and figures to spend the entire season at High-A Clearwater.
