Past Fantasy Outlooks

2011
2010
Renfroe's first year in full-season ball at Low-A Greenville in 2011 didn't show us much. He needs to refine his approach at the plate and learn to recognize pitches. There's some pop in his bat, but unless he can learn some patience and not chase breaking stuff, we're not going to see it. There is some good infield talent at the lower levels of Boston's organization and this will be a big year for Renfroe to prove he's part of that group. We suspect he'll repeat at Low-A and we'll be looking to see if he handles the competition better with a year of experience.
The 2010 season was a bit disappointing for Renfroe, who has the potential to be a good hitter, but struggled with pitch recognition and hit just .190 for Short-Season Lowell. This led to poor contact rates and a high number of strikeouts. Pitchers will continue to test him as he advances to Low-A Greenville and we'll be watching to see how he reacts to the flaws that were exposed in 2010.
Taken in the third round of the 2009 draft out of high school in Mississippi, Renfroe's biggest development need in 2010 is to adjust to the professional environment. He was a pitcher and shortstop in Batesville (Miss.), but the Red Sox are going to deploy him to the field. At 6-3, 200, and still growing, Renfroe will likely move to third base if his bat develops as most scouts think it will. He shows good power for his age with a balanced approach and the ability to use all fields. It's not out of the question that his advanced hitting skills, defensive polish and high baseball acumen, lands him at Low-A Greenville to open the season.
