Adams returned to the Twins as a non-roster invitee Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Adams struggled in his 16.2 innings for the Tigers last season, recording a 7.02 ERA and 13 walks. Prior to being claimed off waivers by Detroit in May, the 33-year-old pitched 18 innings for Triple-A Rochester within the Twins' organization, posting a more modest 4.50 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and a 28:6 K:BB. The veteran right-hander will have an opportunity to impress the big-league coaching staff this spring, but he will likely return to the minors given the amount of experienced arms that make up the Minnesota bullpen.

Adams has bounced around between Triple-A Columbus and the Indians over the past two seasons, registering 48 appearances in a middle relief role during that time. The righty struggled throughout 2016, especially near the end, posting a 24.00 ERA in four appearances in September to bring his season ERA to an abysmal 9.82 in 18.1 innings. The numbers just aren't there for Adams, really. His inability to make people miss is an issue, as his strikeout rate has never carried over from the minors and his .373 BABIP is worrisome at any level. It would seem as if there is little to look forward to with the 30-year-old, whose ailing numbers are rightfully neglected in the middle of the best bullpens in the league. Adams regressed in most statistical categories from 2015 to 2016, although a move to the Angels could bode well for him, as their bullpen situation is dire enough that he could carve out a decent role with enough solid outings.
Adams bounced around between Triple-A Columbus and the big club, logging 28 appearances in a middle-relief role with the Indians. He hasn't been able to miss bats in the majors with nearly the same frequency that he's shown in the minors, as his 6.0 K/9 across two seasons in the big leagues is well below the 9.7 K/9 he's racked up across 126 appearances at Double-A and Triple-A in his career. Adams doesn't have any worrisome platoon splits to cause indigestion for skipper Terry Francona, but he doesn't carve up either side enough to warrant much more than a middle-relief role going forward. There's not much to get excited about here, as he is not in a position to step in if closer Cody Allen were to go down with an injury.
Two years removed from shoulder surgery, Adams pitched very well at Triple-A Columbus in 2014 and earned a couple of brief looks with the Indians in the second half of the season. Walks plagued him upon his return to the mound in 2013 (4.8 BB/9), but Adams is a hard-throwing righty who works mostly with a mid-90s fastball (average 96.5 mph) and slider, while mixing in the occasional changeup. At Triple-A, Adams struck out nearly one quarter of the batters that he faced, although that rate plummeted during his limited time in Cleveland. At age-28, he'll compete for a spot in the bullpen during spring training, but Adams may face an uphill battle to crack the Opening Day roster in what has become a very solid relief corps.
After losing his entire 2012 season to shoulder surgery, Adams returned to action at Double-A Akron and showed a continued ability to miss bats working as a reliever (12.4 K/9). A major hurdle in reaching the big leagues, however, will be cutting back on his free passes, which have been an increasing problem each year going back to his time as a starter at High-A Kinston back in 2010. Adams offers a power arm from the right side capable of making an impact in the late innings, but he may have to prove he can retire hitters at Columbus before getting an opportunity in the Cleveland bullpen.
