ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old was originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 draft by the Yankees, but also spent time in the Reds and Mariners organizations. Cotham will end his playing career to bring value to baseball in ways other than playing after pitching 34 major-league innings with a 7.15 ERA in his career.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
Cotham was part of the return for the Aroldis Chapman trade last offseason, as the 29-year-old was shipped from the Yankees to Cincinnati. The righty leveraged a terrific minor league campaign in 2015 into his first big league exposure later that year, and even though he looked overmatched in those 12 outings, it was enough to earn him an extended look out of the Reds’ bullpen in 2016. He was unspectacular in 23 outings with a 7.40 ERA, done in by a high 4.4 BB/9 and an unlucky .378 BABIP before suffering a season-ending injury on the last day of May. Now a free agent, Cotham is expected to be fully recovered from the knee surgery he underwent in August in time for the start of spring training. He’ll likely be viewed as organizational pitching depth rather than a candidate for high-leverage opportunities going forward.
After a couple non-noteworthy seasons, Cotham was terrific in the minors last year, pitching to a 1.74 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 31 innings with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, good enough to earn a promotion to the major leagues. His success didn't carry over to the majors though, as he struggled to the tune of a 6.52 ERA in 12 appearances, but he continued to make hitters swing and miss (12 strikeouts in 9.2 innings). The 28-year-old was never particularly high on prospect rankings, but after his impressive performance in the minors and trade to the Reds in the Aroldis Chapman deal, he may get a chance to compete for a spot in the major league bullpen during spring training. Even if Cotham does make the Opening Day roster, he's a long shot to work high-leverage innings at any point in 2016.
