Shoulder
January 22, 2011
Ibarra has not yet begun a throwing program while recovering from labrum surgery in his right shoulder, WEEI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The organization had debated the rehab or surgery decision immediately following the season, but eventually decided on surgery in November. "We ended up having to clean up his shoulder a little bit. He will actually be out until spring training," said Red Sox farm director Mike Hazen. "He wasn't able to get over the hump throwing-wise. We were in that situation where, do we wait and have it flare up and then he misses the season, or, if we do it now, he rehabs the entire offseason and he's back playing in April."

2011 Fantasy Outlook
Ibarra brings an advanced bat to the organization after coming over from Cuba in 2010. His time in the minor-league levels was delayed and he didn't start playing with High-A Salem until August. Then it was offseason shoulder surgery, so that's the big question we see heading into 2011. He's relatively new to catching and has a lot of work to do defensively, beyond the question of the shoulder responding to surgery. He does have good baseball instincts and athleticism with the club feeling he can grow into an average catcher, at least, with a good bat. Look for a return to High-A Salem, where he'll likely stay for the full season allowing Ibarra to build his defensive skills at a measured pace.
