Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
2014
After a 2014 conversion to starting, Leon spent 2015 mainly as a reliever and spent the majority of his season in Triple-A for the third season in a row. He did finally see some time with the big club, throwing 26.2 innings in relief with a 4.39 ERA. For the second season in row, Leon's walk rate was elevated, but he was able to bump his K/9 to 8.5 (from 7.9) in Triple-A, perhaps a sign that the relief role was a good fit for him. Leon's ERA in the minors was 2.95, but one has to be wary going forward as his FIP in that span was 4.36. Leon, once a promising teenager in the A's system is now a 27-year old reliever who has not shown a lot to force himself on to the roster. He will have to shine in the spring to break camp with the team and figures to struggle to provide any fantasy value in 2016 after being removed from the 40-man roster during the offseason.
Leon served as a starter for Triple-A Sacramento and had a very disappointing season, with an unsightly 4.97 ERA and an equally-ugly 1.52 WHIP. He was converted to a full-time starter before the 2013 season and it just has not gone well. After some solid work in the minors as a reliever, Leon has not been able to repeat that success as a starter. His walk rate jumped from 1.5 BB/9 in 2013 to 3.2 BB/9 last season, and he also allowed 10.6 H/9. On a positive note, his strikeout rate spiked from 6.1 K/9 in 2013 to 7.9 K/9 last year, but if he cannot find a way to limit baserunners, his chances of breaking into the rotation with the big club will slip away rapidly.
Leon started his 2013 by famously starting the brawl between Mexico and Canada in the World Baseball Classic when he hit Rene Tosoni with a pitch. Leon was converted into a starter in 2013, making 24 starts across Double-A and Triple-A after primarily being used a reliever in five prior seasons in the A's farm system. Leon displayed excellent control as a starter (1.5 BB/9), but his strikeout rate dropped to 6.1 K/9 from 10.0 K/9 as a reliever in 2012. Leon will likely be one of the five starters in the A's Triple-A rotation to start the year.
