Arismendy Alcantara

Alcantara started the year on the Cubs roster, but he lasted just three weeks in the majors and spent the rest of the year struggling for Triple-A Iowa. While he flashes double-double potential as a middle infielder, his 125:35 K:BB for Iowa explains why the Cubs couldn't find much use for him last year. The 24-year-old can play a lot of positions, but the Cubs are covered up the middle with Javier Baez, Addison Russell and now Ben Zobrist all on the roster, so Alcantara will likely end up back at Iowa to start the year. Keep in mind, though, that Alcantara could also be an option in center field if a need arises and he gets off to a good start at Triple-A. He could also be flipped in a trade if he reestablishes his value on the market.

When Alcantara joined the Cubs in July, he looked like a fantasy stud in the making, thanks to 10 home runs, 21 stolen bases, and a .307 batting average in half a season with Triple-A Iowa. He exploded onto the scene with nine hits and five RBI in his first five games in the majors, but that was his high watermark of the season, as he couldn't top the Mendoza Line in either of the final two months. The main culprit was an inability to hit against right-handers (.565 OPS and 7:73 BB:K ratio in 200 at-bats), but his minor league splits weren't nearly that wide (career .775 OPS against righties, .805 against lefties). Alcantara will be given every opportunity to earn a starting job this spring, but the crowded infield depth chart may open that door for him in center field.

The 22-year-old Alcantara stole 31 bases for Double-A Tennessee last year, and his 36 doubles, 15 home runs, 62 walks, and .804 OPS show he's not just some empty speedster. He could play either second base or shortstop, so if he makes the team, he could be a sneaky-good $1 dart at the end of the draft, especially if Darwin Barney's and Starlin Castro's offensive struggles continue in 2014.
