Conine played regularly for Baltimore in leftfield and at first base last year, then was traded to Philadelphia in August and played in right field down the stretch. He finished with good numbers for a 40-year-old, although you should look for more than 10 homers and 66 RBI from a corner outfielder. He had a vested option kick in with 450 plate appearances. He was traded to the Reds in December, where he'll platoon with Scott Hatteberg at first base and get occasional playing time in the outfield.
Mr. Marlin posted his worst slugging percentage since his first full big league season back in 1993, and despite the gaping holes in the Florida outfield he isn't expected back. Look for someone who needs a veteran corner bat, and isn't too picky about the "bat" part, to offer him a deal.
Conine enters spring as the Marlins starting first baseman and has a real shot at being the worst everyday first baseman in the NL. Two offseason shoulder surgeries aren't going to make his 38-year-old bat any quicker.
Mr. Marlin came home for the stretch run, supplying some magic intangibles and a couple of key hits. He sticks around as an aging, overpaid power hitter clogging up left field… but at least Jeffrey Loria's got that ring.
Conine went down with hamstring problems in June last season and didn't come back until August. He managed to hit 15 homers with 63 RBI in 116 games, and will most likely start the season as the club's first baseman. He's a run producer who won't hurt your fantasy team as a late round selection.
