The best that can be said about Vaughn's season is that he missed enough games with his left knee injury to allow the insurance policy to kick-in, where 75% of Vaughn's salary is reimbursed. Vaughn's injury has been diagnosed as osteo-arthritis and bone spurs, as well a lack of cartilage in the knee that causes the bones to rub against each other. This cannot be easily repaired with surgery and career-ending knee replacement surgery was the recommendation of six doctors. Vaughn won't play in 2004 and the Mets may collect $11.25M from insurance as a result.
Vaughn came to the Mets in 2002 trying to rebound from his bicep injury that kept him out the entire 2001 season. It didn't help that he was grossly overweight. Vaughn had a dismal first three months after suffering a broken finger in April, hitting just eight home runs and driving in just 31. He came on strong and launched 18 more long balls and drove home 41 more over the second half. If he keeps himself in decent shape, 30 homers and 100 RBI could be in sight.
