Brocail has announced his retirement, according to the Houston Chronicle.
ANALYSIS
At age 42, Brocail admitted: "It's harder to get my arm in shape, and the talent just isn't there anymore." Statistically, it did appear he fell off a cliff last season, throwing just 17.2 innings and walking more batters than he struck out. After Brocail's 15 seasons, long for a guy who was never given much of a chance to start or close, he holds a 4.00 ERA and a winning record at 52-48.

It was a lost season for Brocail -- he spent a good portion of 2009 on and off the disabled list after declining season-ending surgery in July. He is just one year removed from a string of a couple successful seasons, so he still may have the stuff to be a viable late-inning option in front of an established closer. He figures to sign a non-guaranteed minor league contract with an invitation to spring training with another team at some point before February.
Brocail is the kind of veteran middle reliever that all major league teams need. He went 5-1 with a 3.05 ERA and 1.174 WHIP in 2007. His 43 strikeouts in 76.2 innings aren't much to write home about, so from a fantasy standpoint, he's much less valuable to you than he is to any big league club.
Brocail overcame two March angioplasties to throw 28.1 IP for the Padres in 2006. When he returned, however, he pitched in middle relief with limited success. Then his season was cut short by a torn right hamstring. He is expected to be fully recovered by spring training, but he's on the downside of his career. Still, he'll try to win a set-up role again this spring.
Brocail failed to build on a strong second half in 2004 after a lengthy absence from the majors. A move to a middle relief role with the Padres in Petco Park can only help revive his career.
Brocail had a nice season in middle-to-late relief for Texas in 2004, particularly as the season wore on (2.18 ERA after the All-Star break, with 3 ER after August 1). He'll be back in 2005, having signed a one-year deal.
