The Padres are indeed pursuing Finley, a 200-game winner who sat out the 2003 season, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
"I've let his agent know that if he wanted to play next year, then we would have interest," general manager Kevin Towers said Monday. The Padres are interested in acquiring a low to mid-range left-hander, which would give then room in the budget to obtain another pitcher, presumably a veteran right-hander of a slightly higher caliber.

2003 Fantasy Outlook
Despite going 7-4 with a 3.80 ERA and an 83/30 K/BB ratio down the stretch for St. Louis, the Cardinals are unlikely to re-sign the 40-year old lefty to the two-year term he’s seeking, so he will probably land elsewhere. Where he winds up will make all the difference both in terms of run support and park effects, and while in the right situation, we think Finley could still be effective. In the wrong one, e.g., Enron Field, Ballpark in Arlington, etc., he could take a beating. Consider that Finley, despite having good command of the strike zone, gave up 245 hits in his last 219 innings over his last season and two thirds with the Indians.
