ANALYSIS
The 38-year-old righthander is recovering from surgery to his lower abdomen and groin. Moehler had hinted that he might retire after the 2010 season, but the fact that he went through with the surgery in September hints that he may want to come back for one more go.

Moehler found his way into 20 more games last season, eight as a starter and 12 as a reliever, before a groin injury shut him down for the year. Despite hinting at retirement, the 39-year-old right-hander had surgery in September, suggesting he may want to come back for one more go. A poor 28 strikeouts in 56.2 innings isn't encouraging, and neither was his flat 1.08 K/BB. He's not under contract for 2011, and it remains to be seen whether the Astros will have a continued appetite for Moehler's mediocrity.
Serviceable is probably the nicest way to describe Moehler. In 2009, he went 8-12 with a 5.47 ERA and 1.539 WHIP. When you listen to Astros GM Ed Wade talk about Moehler, it seems as though his best attribute is his professionalism, which unfortunately doesn't translate to on-field success or fantasy value. The Astros and Moehler exercised a $3 million mutual option for 2010 in October, making it likely he'll be around as the team's No. 5 starter, at least until one of the Astros' minor league pitchers is ready.
Moehler entered the year as part of Houston's bullpen, but was quickly forced into the rotation where he spent most of the year. He went 11-8 with a 4.56 ERA in 31 appearances, 26 of which were starts. At this point in his career we know what to expect out of him. He can serve as a durable fifth starter if necessary, but he's better equipped to pitch out of the bullpen. He'll provide the occasional shred of value when he's given the opportunity for a spot start, but that's it.
Moehler made 42 appearances for the Astros in 2007, and went 1-4 with a 4.07 ERA. At 36 years old, there's a chance he's seen his last days in the majors.
Moehler served his purpose for the Marlins in 2006, plugging holes in the young rotation when injury or ineffectiveness created them. He'll probably have to settle for a spring NRI somewhere and hope he can recapture the magic of his 2005 first half (3.27 ERA).
Moehler got off to a great start in 2005, but eventually found his natural level. The Marlins brought him back as a relatively inexpensive rotation stop-gap. He'll take a regular turn only until some kid pushes him aside.
Moehler had Tommy John surgery in May 2003 and likely will miss most, if not all, of the 2004 season.
Moehler is a soft-tosser trying to recover from shoulder surgery. Let someone else take the gamble that he can return to his pre-injury form.
