ANALYSIS
"I've always been a guy that's said when I stop enjoying it as much as I have (I'll retire)," he said. "I've never played with anyone that had more fun than me, I loved the game, but I never really liked the travel, my kids are getting older and I felt like I want to be a guy that's a joy and it's a joy to go to the park."

After posting abysmal numbers with the Yankees due as much to his inability to keep the ball on the ground as to the defense behind him, Quantrill escaped to San Diego and found his sinker again. Someone will likely give him another chance to find it again, but his leash grows shorter with every passing year.
The rubber-armed Quantrill injured his knee in a collision with Alex Rodriguez early in the season and never looked quite right, especially down the stretch, when he gave up 26 ER in his last 29 IP. He'll compete with Felix Rodriguez for seventh-inning calls, but a .316 OBA isn't going to cut it for too long. Take your $1 flier elsewhere.
Quantrill put up a great season in 2003, with a WHIP under 1.00 and an ERA below 2.00, but at age 35 and with only 44 strikeouts in 75 innings, the Dodgers will be happy that he opted out of his $3.1 contract. Don't look for him to repeat those numbers.
Another solid year of production as Quantrill saw a career high number of games (86) and only gave up one homer. Signed for two more years at around $3 mil per year.
