ANALYSIS
After throwing just 50 2/3 bad innings (5.33 ERA) in 2005, he should be happy if he can get a spring NRI.

Valdez couldn't follow up his reasonably serviceable second half from 2004 -- not much of a surprise, really, given his track record. The last time he posted a major league ERA under 4.50 was in 2002, and wherever he washes up this year, the results aren't likely to be any different.
Valdez is just too hittable these days to be anything more than a spot starter. Woe to the club that relies on him for a regular turn in the rotation.
Shoulder problems cropped up for Valdez after a 119-pitch outing in mid-April and he basically never recovered. You can dig through all the numbers, and there was nothing good about his 2003 season. He can be a somewhat dependable innings eater toward the middle of the rotation, but he walks a fine line between posting a 4.50 ERA and a 5.50 ERA with the lack of Ks and problems keeping the ball in the park at times.
Valdes' record would look better if he received at least league average run support. His lack of dominance is a bit of a concern, but his superb control eases our concerns a bit.
