Esteban Yan

When Ugueth Urbina was forced to leave the Tigers to attend to his mother's kidnapping in Venezuela at the end of the season, Yan assumed the closer's role. He was inconsistent in that stint and the Tigers declined to offer him arbitration at the end of the season. Now in Anaheim, he's buried deeply enough to have little fantasy value.

Yan will try to win a job in the bullpen this spring.

Just think: if the Angels and Devil Rays had actually pulled off that rumored deal in July that included Yan, he'd have become Troy Percival's set-up man, and we may never have heard of young Francisco Rodriguez. Ah, well . . . Yan entered 2002 with one more chance to really establish himself as the Devil Rays' closer, and he couldn't make it happen. As a result, he's pretty much burned his bridges as a bullpen ace in Tampa Bay, as the Rays are looking at both the free agent market and their other relievers for closer options in 2003. Yan could still help a team somewhere in a set-up role.
