Nunez signed a minor league deal with Arizona on Friday, the D-Backs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Josh Wilson was claimed off waivers by the Padres on Friday, so Nunez will provide a utility option at Triple-A Reno available for a short-term callup if injuries ravage the Snakes' infield depth later on this season.

Nunez had a .234 batting average with 16 RBI and no homers in 2007, while being a part of the revolving door at third base for the Phillies. The switch-hitter's bat never got going, hitting .222 in his two seasons with Philadelphia, but his real value came in his defense. The Phillies declined Nunez's option for 2008, so expect him to fill a utility role elsewhere in 2008.
Nunez mostly backed up third base for Philadelphia until David Bell was traded, after which he played there regularly. He could never get his bat going despite drawing some walks. Wes Helms's arrival means another platoon role at best in 2007 for Nunez, who offers very little to fantasy owners.
Nunez had a breakout campaign for the Redbirds in 2005 while filling in for Scott Rolen at third base. The utility player cashed in on his surprising year by signing a multi-million-dollar deal with the Phillies in the offseason. He'll split time with David Bell at third and back up second and short.
The lifetime .238 hitter saw more action last season (311 at-bats) than he is likely to this year, but the Pirates held onto the switch-hitter to provide middle infield depth in case players with more upside, such as Freddy Sanchez and Bobby Hill require more seasoning. Nunez, who has been around since 1997, set career highs in games, triples, home runs, RBI and runs scored, but the bar wasn't set very high to begin with.
Serviceable backup shortstop who doesn’t hit enough to force Jack Wilson out of the lineup, which tells you all you need to know about Nunez’ fantasy value.
