Lee is still the best defensive first baseman in the game; in fantasy leagues, however, that attribute is as important as good penmanship. His bat did pick up in the second half of last season, so he'll get a chance to be at least part of a platoon at first base for the Devil Rays.
Lee managed just 19 AB in 2004, missing most of the season with an injured left shoulder. He's still just 29, but will likely have to hook on as a backup somewhere before reestablishing himself as a lower-tier option at first base.
Lee had the best offensive year of his career in 2003, though it was well short of folks thought his ceiling might be when he was drafted way back when. Tampa Bay wanted Lee back in 2004, but for family reasons, Lee decided to work elsewhere this year. Lee will still help a club immensely with his defense at first base. However, the shorter the right field fences are in Lee's new home, the better off he'll be in 2004.
The fact that Lee wouldn't be with the Phillies next season was determined long before they signed Jim Thome. Lee and manager Larry Bowa never got along. Lee has defied all predictions for his stardom. He averages 15 homers, 67 RBI with a .255 per season, which would be good if this were 1968. In Tampa Bay, he'll fill the role of a defensive first baseman (or reserve outfielder), and any offense will be a bonus.
