Cabrera was given his unconditional release in January and is expected to sign with a Japanese team. Cabrera played every position last year, save for the battery, and his versatility could generate some interest for his services among major league clubs.

Cabrera played well off the bench in 2003 and worked his way into a share of the second base job with Alex Cora, but the Dodgers know they need an offensive upgrade to compete. Don't expect another 345 at bats for Cabrera in 2004.
