While Sauerbeck has been somewhat effective when healthy the last few years, he's pitched just one full season since 2003 due to hamstring and shoulder injuries. At age 36, it would seem his career is close to an end.
Coming off of shoulder surgery, Sauerbeck was used lightly in 2005 and responded by doing his job very well. He's a lefty specialist who held left-handers to a .162 average, striking out 25 of the 84 he faced. More of the same should be expected in 2006.
After breaking out as a powerful lefty specialist in 2002 and early 2003 with the Pirates, Sauerbeck's mound presence has dropped considerably after being traded to the Red Sox near the trading deadline when his ERA blossomed. He did not pitch in 2004 due to shoulder surgery, but will take a shot at making the Indians bullpen come this spring.
Sauerbeck pitched poorly for Boston after coming over from Pittsburgh late in July. He got shelled a couple of times and had problems walking first batters, and lost the confidence of then-manager Grady Little. With Casey Fossum traded away, Sauerbeck could become the second lefty out of pen, or alternatively could be non-tendered by the Red Sox and signed by another organization.
Sauerbeck is a serviceable lefty specialist with some value in leagues that use holds (he had 28 last year, 19 in 2001). He pitched well enough in 2002 that you could entertain the notion of him as a backup closer, although McClendon showed no inclination to split the duties: Mike Williams had 46 of the Pirates’ 47 saves in 2002.
