The Dodgers opted not to re-sign Saenz after his .191/.295/.345 performance in 2007. At age 37, Saenz's bat speed has eroded to the point where he's no longer an asset even against left-handed pitching and thus, his career could be over. He'll probably get a spring training invitation from some team desperate for a 25th man, but there just isn't enough power upside here to scoop him up in the deepest of leagues.
Nomar Garciaparra and James Loney limited Saenz's at-bats in 2006, but as a pinch-hitter and spot starter against left-handers, Saenz filled a role that is best-suited for his abilities. It is a role to which he'll return in 2007.
Saenz is a lefty-masher that excels in spot starts and pinch-hit opportunities, but he tends to wilt when asked to do anything more than that. He'll be with the Dodgers for two more years after re-signing with them in December.
Saenz was productive off the bench for the Dodgers in 2004. He could platoon with Hee Seop Choi at first base or be a valuable reserve.
Cost-conscious A's are not expected to bring him back. A ruptured Achilles tendon in the Division Series against the Twins might keep him sidelined to start the season. He pounded lefties pretty good in limited action. Someone will find a spot for him, though he might have to take a minor-league deal with an invite given the nature of his injury.
