Norton, like many lefty specialists, is fine when he's only asked to get out a hitter or two. Anytime he has to go for a full inning, however, he's generally out of his depth if he has to face a decent right-handed hitter.
Norton gave the Reds hope that he could adequately fill their lefty specialist role after arriving in a trade late in August. A quick look at his peripheral numbers might suggest that his low ERA with the Reds might have been a product of a small sample size, rather than a representation of his ability. He had Tommy John surgery in January 2002, so it's possible that he could be pitching with a smidge more velocity come 2004.
