Scott Williamson

Williamson's 23/6 K/BB ratio in 14 1/3 IP for the Cubs last season is a good indication that he's all the way back from 2004 Tommy John surgery. With the offseason signings of Bobby Howry and Scott Eyre, Williamson's role with the Cubs is unclear, and GM Jim Hendry has been looking to deal him. Health permitting, Williamson could make a very good setup man and even a potential closer for another team.

Williamson was limited by a forearm/elbow injury that was first diagnosed as a ruptured tendon, but later was deemed less serious and merely in need of rest. He eventually had elbow surgery and that clouds his value entering 2005. When healthy last season, he pitched well for Boston, but the injury raises flags. Most teams will likely back off until he proves he's completely healthy. Williamson could turn out to be someone's bargain closer if healthy, but don't expect more than a half-season worth of work due to his balky elbow.

Williamson became the Red Sox closer during the playoffs and proved to be very effective. Yet, the team signed Keith Foulke this winter. As a result, he won't get many saves this year but could be an effective setup man.

Williamson, who is fully back from Tommy John Surgery, ended the 2002 season as the Reds closer, with Danny Graves moving into the starting rotation. If the Reds can sign Williamson (not an idle concern – they played hardball with him in 2002, in his first season of arbitration eligibility), he'll begin the 2003 season as the closer. Williamson's future success hinges upon his ability to remain healthy. Many scouts have commented that Williamson's delivery leaves him vulnerable to future elbow troubles.
