Singleton left the Devil Rays because he misunderstood the team's offer to return to the major leagues, expecting to get paid more in addition to his current $550,000 salary, the Tampa Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Singleton was already owed the remainder of his $550,000 contract. When he was demoted earlier this season, he refused assignment and became a free agent. When he returned, he expected a pro rata portion of the major league minimum *in addition* to his current contract. We're not sure why he thought he merited that - refusing assignment doesn't usually seem to be a good ploy to get a raise.

Singleton was invited to the Devil Rays camp as a spring NRI, and against long odds, he made the 25-man roster. He'll start the season as the fourth outfielder, likely becoming Alex Sanchez' late inning defensive caddy in center field, and could get occassional DH at-bats as well.
Singleton's defense in center is starting to slip, which is where his value lies given his weak bat. The A's declined their contract option, leaving Singleton to fend for himself in what figures to be a bloated free agent market.
Singleton is hardly your prototypical A's player, in that his walk rate is particularly putrid. However, the A's signed him for his defense in center, where Terrence Long was less than good. The change in franchises probably will do nothing to improve his bat.
