When you have trouble out-slugging Jason Kendall, you know you've got issues. He's nothing more than Kendall's caddy, and might even lose a few starts behind the dish if the A's decide to let Mike Piazza dust of the shinpads every once in awhile. With Kurt Suzuki pushing for a job in 2008, Melhuse's days are numbered. In the meantime, he'll fetch the 9-iron for Kendall.
Melhuse saw his playing time reduced due to the arrival of Jason Kendall, but he did little in limited playing time to warrant more. While "Outhitting Jason Kendall" looks good on a resume, he still hit just .247/.284/.381 in 97 AB. A change of scenery, and subsequent increase in playing time, would do him some good. A nice $1 option if he lands elsewhere.
Melhuse showed good pop for a backup catcher in 2004. With Jason Kendall around, he won't get 214 AB again unless Kendall gets hurt or bitches enough to get shipped out of Oakland.
Melhuse made for a decent $1 catcher in AL-only leagues in 2003, hitting .299 with five HRs. He's the A's starting catcher following the trade of Ramon Hernandez, but that isn't expected to last long.
