Poised to build on a decent 2004, Tucker instead lost most of the season to elbow trouble. If he can bounce back, he should slot into the Nationals bullpen as their swing man.
Except for a brief April minor league sojourn Tucker stayed in the Expos bullpen and had a solid year, maintaining his improved 2003 walk rate but upping his K's. He seems destined for a life in middle relief -- a couple more seasons like the last one and he'll start pulling down the big bucks.
Like the year before, Tucker had one good half and one bad half, but the good half was really just one good month (August, when he posted a 1.69 ERA). A lack of options will have him in the hunt for a rotation job this spring, but we just don't see him being up to it.
First-half ERA was 1.75, but for no discernable reason, and back problems increased it tenfold in the second half. His future performance lies somewhere in the middle, but it's hard to say exactly where, and there are far too many nasty numbers between 1 and 10 for you to go near him.
