Sardinha was non-tendered in December and at press time, was a still a free agent. The Yankees have gone the way of acquiring everyday outfielders through trades and free agency, rather than developing them in house, so he was pushing against heavy odds to be anything more than a fourth or fifth outfielder in New York anyways. With a fresh start elsewhere, Sardinha should get an opportunity hone his skills at Triple-A until his new club needs a left-handed bat with decent power and speed for a reserve role.
Once a highly-coveted prospect in the Yankee farm system, the 23-year-old Sardinha didn't show a great deal of power or speed after a mid-season promotion to Triple-A. He's already been moved to the outfield to lessen the impact of his average defensive skills, but his future in New York isn't as an everyday player.
Sardinha projects to gain some power as he fills out, and stole 13 bases in 16 attempts. He's probably two seasons away from helping a major league team.
Sardinha, who went .263/.334/.406 in 342 Low-A at-bats last season, has the instincts and the tools to move up through the Yankees' system, but at 19, he's still at least a couple years away.
