Hessman announced Saturday that he is retiring to pursue a coaching job, the Oakland Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Apparently, the Tigers considered giving Hessman a September call-up, but it was not in the cards for the 37-year-old first baseman. The all-time leader in minor league home runs with 433, Hessman made 109 appearances at the major league level, the last coming back in 2010. He spent time in five organizations in his 20 professional seasons and will now look to start a new chapter on the coaching side, though it's uncertain if the Tigers have any interest in bringing him back in that capacity.

Hessman hit more than 30 home runs for the second straight season at Triple-A last year and was also selected to play for Team USA during the Olympics. He saw some time in Detroit toward the end of the year as a September callup. While Hessman has no problem hitting the ball out of the yard, it is what he does with the rest of his at-bats that has kept him out of the majors this long. He strikes out a lot. Despite that, the Tigers could let him compete for a bench job this spring. He's probably deserving of spot as his pop on the bench would be a nice asset.
Hessman got his first taste of the majors last season since a short stint with the Braves in 2004. He has displayed big time power throughout his minor league career, but he also strikes out a ton. Tigers manager Jim Leyland seems to like Hessman as a bench option at the corner infield spots so he should get a chance to earn a roster spot this spring. His power would be nice to have on the bench, but his propensity to whiff would limit his value.
Hessman's power last year at Triple-A came at the expense of plate discipline and average. The Tigers have plenty of outfield and first base depth, so his chances of getting an opportunity are slim.
Hessman struggled in a brief call-up with the Braves last season. He's shown strong power throughout his minor league career, but has been too much of a free swinger to project any success at the major league level.
Hessman has shown strong power throughout his major league career, but has been too much of a free swinger to be anything but a pinch hitter at the major league level.
