Reed got a chance early to solve the Marlins' problems in center field, but an .098 batting average (with zero extra base hits) sent him tumbling back to Triple-A. He's been able to hit .300 in the minors consistently, but given his lack of power or an exceptional batting eye his chances of maintaining those numbers in the majors, or even establishing himself as anything other than a fifth outfielder/pinch runner/defensive sub, seem slim.
Reed is considered in some circles to be Juan Pierre's heir apparent in the leadoff spot, but that just seems like wishful thinking given that he walks even less than Pierre does. Still, he'll get every chance this spring to win a job in the outfield, and has the speed potential (he stole 40 bases in 55 attempts last season, and is 143-for-183 over four minor league seasons) to be an interesting fantasy sleeper.
Reed hit a tidy .306 with 24 steals in half a season at Double-A, but like any number of minor league leadoff men, he needs to learn the strike zone better before he'll be able to put that speed to use.
