Olmedo surfaced in late August as Toronto's primary backup infielder once Royce Clayton was cast aside, but he faces an uphill battle this spring now that Marco Scutaro has been acquired from the A's.
Olmedo is once again a long shot to make the Reds' Opening Day roster, and for as long as he's a professional ballplayer, will be on the fringes of making a team's roster. His defense and speed will keep him around, but his bat isn't good enough to get him into a lineup on a regular basis.
Olmedo's upside is as a light-hitting utility infielder for the Reds, and if they bring Rich Aurilia back, he probably won't even get to fulfill that role.
Olmedo suffered a complete tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow while playing winter ball in Venezuela. He was a longshot to win the shortstop job to begin with - this injury should knock him out of the running for at least the first few months of the season.
The Reds have a tendency to overrate their own slick-fielding, slap-hitting middle infield prospects, and Olmedo is Exhibit A of that tendency. His bat is nowhere near ready for major league pitching, and the fact that the Reds are considering him seriously for at least part-time starting duty is indicative of their minimal offensive potential for 2004.
Olmedo has a slick glove and a decent batting eye, but absolutely no power, slugging .314 in 478 at bats at Double-A Chattanooga in 2002. He's still young enough to develop some power, but it might behoove him to hurry up.
