Lopez earned a bullpen spot after a big spring last season and ended up spending most of the season in Detroit. It was the first time since 2003 that Lopez had logged a significant amount of innings in the majors. His 61:22 K:BB ratio in 78.2 innings was solid and he earned praise from manager Jim Leyland for his strike-throwing ability on a staff that struggled to find the plate with consistency. The Tigers non-tendered him in December, but he'll probably get a chance to compete for a bullpen job as a non-roster invite to spring training somewhere even if Detroit doesn't bring him back.
Lopez, a journeyman reliever who spent all of 2006 in the minors, split the 2007 season shuttling back and forth between Detroit and Triple-A Toledo. He was solid for the Mud Hens but didn't do a lot with his opportunities in Detroit. He'll get a chance to compete for a bullpen job this spring but he'll likely end up back at Triple-A to provide depth.
The Rockies lost Lopez to Philadelphia in a waiver mistake when a trade with Boston fell through. He pitched well on the year and took steps toward re-establishing himself as a major leaguer. Lopez has some potential as a setup man, and now that he's out of Colorado, it will be interesting to see what he can do.
Lopez' season started with a disaster of a spring training and never recovered. Dogged by the long ball, he shuttled between Toronto and Triple-A Syracuse, struggling everywhere he pitched. He's now a 30-year-old minor league free agent.
Lopez struggles with lefties, including a poor 12:18 K:BB ratio in 29.1 innings, but seven of his earned runs came in two appearances that covered just one-third of an inning. Kerry Ligtenberg's signing clouds Lopez's role a bit, as does the trade for Justin Speier. The saves in Toronto could be equal part Lopez, Speier, and Ligtenberg, with an occasional dash of Jason Kershner and Trever Miller tossed in.
