Ojeda will enter the 2007 season as the backup to Gerald Laird after the Rangers signed him to a contract in November.
Ojeda played backup roles for the Mariners and Padres in 2005. He's a career .221 hitter and has little power. With J.D. Closser and Danny Ardoin already competing to be Yorvit Torrealba's backup, he's got little chance to play in Colorado this year.
The Mexican League's Javy Lopez plays defense like Javy but hits more like Mendy. He was simply holding the backup seat in 2004 for young defensive catcher Humberto Quintero. It's uncertain what the Padres intend on doing with him in 2005, but he's likely third on the team's depth chart and possibly ticketed to the minors if he remains in San Diego.
At age 28, he was a youthful eight-year veteran of the Mexican Leagues when the Padres gave him a shot in 2003. Known in Mexico as an offensive slugger, he was far from that as a major leaguer. He wasn't terrible defensively but the club looks to have moved on. A return to the Mexican Leagues or an assignment to Triple-A looks to be the eventual destination in 2004.
