Garcia's window of opportunity to stick with the Mets has seemingly passed, especially since both Ricky Gutierrez and Ty Wigginton were viewed as better options at second base. When he did receive an opportunity to play, his inability to hit forced the Mets to send him back to Triple-A. Garcia looks like he will be doomed to utility-land.
Garcia rose rapidly through the Mets system, advancing to earn a promotion to the parent club in August 2003, after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2001 draft. Garcia impressed the team with his mental make-up but needs some more seasoning in the minors. Owner Fred Wilpon has already indicated that Garcia is not the team's second baseman of the immediate future. The Mets' signing of Kaz Matsui confirms that assessment.
